Why

The near-full moon heaves tonight
over both our cities, the more impossible because
the desert between us is populated with darkness.

Somewhere your porch shadows beneath the glow,
your neighbors finish their dinners
and turn in after a small drink.

I walk through the still, warm air,
finding my way by the scent of jasmine only,
the moon's light falling elsewhere.

Because my arms stretch across the sand.
Because your eyes
have more turnings than my garden,
and are just as dark.
